My Highlights of 2013

As has been my annual End of the Year tradition here on Facebook, I'm posting a list of my professional highlights for the extraordinary year of 2013. So, here we go in chronological order.

1. MARS ATTACKS POPEYE – Getting to finally write E.C. Segar's Popeye, one of my all-time favorite characters—was a dream-come-true. Happily, the one-shot comic was very well received. Many thanks to Craig Yoe for the opportunity. Although it was published last January, I still receive fan mail for it, and comics in the mail to sign and send back. Note the rather cryptic Edgar Rice Burroughs reference. Little did I realize what was in store for me.

Art, letters, and colors by Terry Beatty.

 2. Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Weekly Comic Strips – Scoring the writing gig on no less than five weekly comic strips devoted to the fantastic fiction of Edgar Rice Burroughs has been a phenomenal experience, working with some of the most visionary artists in the industry. My line-up, so far: CARSON OF VENUS™ with Thomas Floyd, and Diana Leto, THE ETERNAL SAVAGE™ with Steven E. Gordon, THE WAR CHIEF™ with Nik Poliwko, THE CAVE GIRL™ with Diana Leto ,and THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT with Pablo Marcos and Oscar Gonzalez.

3. San Diego ERB Panel – I can hardly describe the feeling of being an invited guest on the panel, “Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Next 100 Years”, at the prestigious San Diego Comic Convention. I felt I had awakened upon Barsoom. The highlight of my career, thus far.

Pictured left to right: Scott Tracy Griffin, Jane Burroughs, Steven E. Gordon, myself, Diana Leto, Andy Briggs, Dejah Burroughs, and Jim Sullos, President of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

4. ERB Dum Dum 2013. My first experience at the legendary ERB Dum Dum. I’ve never felt so welcomed at a convention before. Epic fantasy author Leia Barrett Durham accompanied me, and I met an amazing number of fans and new friends. Seated next to my long-time hero, paleontologist Phil Currie, and gushing about dinosaurs with him at the banquet, was like winning the lottery. If that wasn’t enough, being invited to lunch, and antique shopping with Linda, Dejah, and Jane Burroughs, was a genuine adventure. Happily, they continue to make me feel like part of their illustrious family.

Me with Linda Burroughs, and her daughters, Jane and Dejah, the great-granddaughters of Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan and so much more.
5. Last autumn, THE HALLOWEEN LEGION ™, co-created with my partner Diana Leto, was published. Our first HL graphic novel was critically acclaimed as an instant “Halloween classic.”
HALLOWEEN LEGION ™ co-creator/illustrator signing books at the Dark Horse booth, during New York Comic Con 2013.
Me during one of two HALLOWEEN LEGION ™ book signings at Barnes and Noble.
 6. If all that wasn’t enough, THE HALLOWEEN LEGION ™ made the shortlist of nominations for the prestigious Stan Lee Excelsior Award!

So long 2013. And now, Onward!

The ERB DUM DUM 2013 in Louisville, Ky!

In celebration of the birthday of the Master of Adventure, the one and only Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875– March 19, 1950), I've decided to post this little journal of highlights from the recent ERB DUM DUM 2013, where I was a guest speaker, held in Louisville, Ky.

Well, Dum Dum 2013 is over. I would like to thank everyone who made me feel so very welcome.  Best. Weekend. Ever.

With Linda Burroughs and her daughters, Jane and Dejah (they are the great granddaughters of Edgar Rice Burroughs).  I got to spend a lot more time with these elegant ladies than from our brief, blurry moments together at the San Diego Comic Con, which included lunch, dinner, and a hilarious adventure antique shopping in downtown Louisville.  In Dejah's words, "Martin you're just like one of the family!"  And, indeed, they certainly make me feel like I am.  That means more to me than I can say.

With the lovely prolific author, and future collaborator, Leia Barrett-Durham, who took time out of her very busy schedule to accompany me.

Among the many remarkable folks at DUM DUM 2013 was primate expert/adventurer Lane Batot. He's accompanied Dr. Jane Goodall in her research, living among the great apes, and is as close to a real-life Tarzan as I will ever experience. An amazing guy.

It was a tremendous thrill to meet my hero, world-famous paleontologist and fellow Edgar Rice Burroughs fan, Phil Currie. When I introduced myself to him, I nearly fell backwards when he said, "Oh, I know who you are, Martin." This shot was taken after the banquet when he'd received his special ERB Lifetime Achievement Award (which he was positively giddy about). I can hardly describe what it was like sitting next to him during dinner, talking dinosaurs. A genuine highlight of my life. And, yes, he really is that tall.

Saturday morning during my presentation "ERB Comic Strip Script Writing ", which was the most purely enjoyable hour I've ever spent before an audience.  The mutual enthusiasm and love I felt from the ERB fans calmed my jitters immediately and I felt at home within seconds.  A wonderful experience.

My discussion was concluded with a  new video created by artist, Diana Leto, discussing our collaboration behind ERB's THE CAVE GIRL, our new romantic comedy/adventure digital comic strip .  Check it out:

My pal, famed TARZAN artist, Tom Yeates.

With Edgar Rice Burroughs collector extraordinaire, and truly impressive gentleman, Ray Le Beau.

ERB scholar, collector, and host of the Dum Dum, the legendary George McWhorter and his charming associate , Delinda Buie.

George opened Dum Dum 2013 with his traditional Tarzan yell.

From the Banquet.

It was fantastic finally getting to meet Bill Hillman and Sue-On Hillman of ERBzine, after all the support they've giving my various ERB projects. Sue-On and Bill keep the legacy of Edgar Rice Burroughs alive on the internet, and are two of the nicest, most accomplished folks I've ever encountered.

Needless to say, my own ERB collection grew a bit after the DUM DUM.
Looking forward to next year!

Special Thanks to Bill and Sue-on Hillman for providing the photos.  To view more pics of the DUM DUM check out:

At San Diego Comic Con 2013!!!

The very best of times with Diana Leto at our San Diego Comic Con Edgar Rice Burroughs panel. Our new online comic strip, THE CAVE GIRL™ also premiered at the same time, coinciding with the centennial celebration of the original novel! How's that for a Burroughs-like coincidence?!

Our SDCC "Edgar Rice Burroughs: "Tarzan, Carson of Venus, and the next 100 Years of Adventure!" Our panel members are Diana Leto, Martin Powell, Scott Tracy Griffin, Andy Briggs, Steven E Gordon, Jim Sullos, and Roy Thomas.

THE CAVE GIRL™ original painting by Diana Leto, signed by all the panelists. It was awarded to a lucky, very emotionally grateful attendee in celebration of the debut of our all new online comic strip, and the centennial celebration of the original novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

After our Friday morning Edgar Rice Burroughs panel, this lucky attendee won Diana's beautiful, original CAVE GIRL™.  The winner emotionally hugged the painting to his chest as if it was a baby, and told me--with tears in his eyes--that he'd never won anything before in his life and how much he loved Edgar Rice Burroughs.

My CAVE GIRL™ partner Diana Leto took this quick shot of me with Linda Burroughs, Llana Jane Burroughs, and Dejah Burroughs, right after our autograph session at San Diego Comic Con. The ladies were adorable in their costumes promoting our online comic strip debut, and centennial celebration, of CAVE GIRL™. It was an epic moment for me getting to meet the descendants of my hero, Edgar Rice Burroughs.

The lovely Burroughs ladies continuing their illustrious family legacy.

This weekend at SDCC was incredibly wondrous.  My favorite time ever on the planet.  So far.

And there's always next year...!
