Hey, What's Betty Cooper Doing Here?

Confessions time. I've been a Betty and Veronica fan, and a reader of Archie Comics in general, since I was about nine years old. Today especially, it seems obvious that the Archie folks are doing something right that most of the others have missed, since we can still find Archie’s comics outside of comic book shops in places like the grocery store checkout line and drug store magazine racks.

Anyway, Diana Leto and I were talking about our mutual love of Archie and the gang and I mentioned that I always wanted to write a Betty and Veronica story. So, last weekend I did, purely for fun. Today, also just for fun, Diana drew this portrait of Betty Cooper, which I think is utterly charming.

Who knows…? Perhaps, with an Archie editor willing, you'll be seeing BETTY AND VERONICA in our spooky comedy "Light's Out!" soon.

Check out Diana's blog for more artistic goodness.

MARS ATTACKS POPEYE Dedicated to Bob Burns

MARS ATTACKS POPEYE is affectionately dedicated to super Popeye fan, the one and only Bob Burns, who is recovering from recent heart surgery.
Eat your spinach, Uncle Bob, and get well soon!

A New Awesome Review!

"It's awesome!  Seriously, my hat is off to Martin Powell (writer) and Terry Beatty (art) for completely capturing the feel and look of Popeye in what has to be my favorite mashup since Archie met the Punisher. Highly recommended."

Rave Reviews Keep On Comin'

"This was as close as you'll ever find to a perfect comic book. Martin Powell does a wonderful job of making Popeye talk like he always has. Terry Beatty demonstrates his adaptability as a cartoonist by depicting Popeye and cast perfectly, making them look like they'd just walked out of one of EC Segar's classic comic strips."

"Thank You...Thank You, too much..."

Another warm heart-felt thank you to everyone who has supported MARS ATTACKS POPEYE which, by most indications, seems to have sold-out for a second week in a row!!
As J. Wellington Wimpy would say, "Thank you, thank you too much!"

"Martin Powell remained true to the wondrous innocence of the bygone age of the 'funny books'...I felt like a kid again, just laughing at Popeye's silly speech patterns....Of course, artist Terry Beatty's artwork helped bring me back into the past as well. The attention to detail of the characters was spot on."

Dreams Come True

I remember literally trembling with excitement as I wrote this page -- depicting the first appearance of the feisty sailor in MARS ATTACKS POPEYE. It was the realization of a life-long dream of writing for Popeye, my favorite character since before I can even remember.

Once I saw Terry Beatty's fabulous art on the page I nearly swooned.

Don't listen to anyone who says that dreams don't come true. I'm living proof that they do.

The Best of Times in the Funny Book Biz

What an amazing time this has been! Yesterday may well go down as my favorite ever day as a funny book writer.
MARS ATTACKS POPEYE is a genuine hit, selling out all over the nation.

I want to thank my great pal, Terry Beatty, for making my words look so hilarious and fun in the comic book pages, my gratitude to IDW editors Craig Yoe, Clizia Gussoni, and Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall for making my life-long dream of writing POPEYE come true, and I'm extremely grateful to Diana Leto for her constant support and boundless enthusiasm for this project from my very first draft of the script and beyond.

Also, I love that fans are posting photos of their newly purchased MARS ATTACKS POPEYE comic books on my Facebook and Twitter walls so I can see their support (such as the one below from Gabriel Rowe). That's really kinda sweet. I've always said that I have the kindest, nicest, and most loyal readers in the business. I truly would be nothing without you folks. Please keep the pics comin'!

Thank you, one and all.

Happy 2013

Well, so long 2012. In the old is-the-glass-half-empty-or-half-full question, I’ve always realistically answered, "It’s both.” While this was a lousy, even tragic year in many ways there were certain wonderful moments started which I hope will go on forever.

All in all, through good times and bad, I’m a very lucky guy.

Happy 2013, everyone.
